On Sunday, Rooney explained why McCarthy was so enticing to the Steelers organization — specifically his winning history and success at developing quarterbacks.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement"He is someone who has a longer track record than many of the other candidates, a winning track record," Rooney said via Bob Labriola of Steelers.com. "He's been a winner everywhere he's been. Probably just as important for our purposes, the quarterbacks that he's worked with have all been very successful. So he has a proven track record of developing top flight quarterbacks. Those are the things that maybe stick out the most."
McCarthy was hired on Saturday to become the Steelers' fourth head coach since 1969, joining the storied lineage of Mike Tomlin (2007-2025), Bill Cowher (1992-2006), and Chuck Noll (1969-1991).
Rooney is also hopeful McCarthy can help the Steelers turn the page and get over the hump on their long-term quarterback woes that have plagued the team, as Pittsburgh has struggled to find Ben Roethlisberger’s heir apparent since he retired in 2021.
