Percy Jackson Season 2's Finale Made A Lot Of Changes To The Book (But It Still Had The Best Nod)

Although the finale of Percy Jackson season 2 made more than a few changes to Sea of Monsters' ending, there was still a really great book nod.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, episode 8Although Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 wasn’t shy about making changes to Rick Riordan's Sea of Monsters novel, there was still one nod to the original book I absolutely loved. In the midst of a key twist involving Percy's father, one element remained the same.

For the most part, Disney's approach to adapting the Percy Jackson book series has been paying off. Although some moments played out very differently from Rick Riordan’s original book, Percy Jackson season 2 still honors the core beats and essence of the source material. Case in point, a great example can be found in Percy's surprise sequence with godly father Poseidon.

Poseidon Does Not Appear In The Original Sea of Monsters Book

In the original Sea of Monsters book, Poseidon never physically appears to Percy. Instead, the aftermath of saving Camp Half-Blood and healing Thalia's tree with the Golden Fleece shows Percy receiving a letter from his father containing just two words: “Brace Yourself.”

In contrast, the show elected to go even bigger in Percy Jackson season 2's finale. During the massive battle between Camp Half-Blood and Luke's followers, Thalia Grace is revived the moment the Fleece is placed on the tree with a massive blast of lightning, putting both Thalia and Percy into a coma.

We then see Percy meeting with Poseidon in a dream-like sequence that also includes Tyson, allowing for a direct and more emotionally charged interaction between the father and his sons. Despite being a key departure from the book, the best part about it is how it still captures the essence of the book, expanding the moment rather than replacing it with something completely new.

“Brace Yourself” – How Percy Jackson Season 2’s Poseidon Scene Makes The Ending Better

Even with this bigger Poseidon scene, the show preserves the spirit of the book with one perfect nod. As the dream ends, Poseidon delivers the same line from the novel: “Brace yourself.” However, it absolutely lands harder here after seeing Percy's father actually being present and voicing more of his support.

This is a great example of how Percy Jackson season 2 balances change while maintaining a strong baseline of respect and honor for the original source material. Overall, the finale improves character dynamics, raises emotional stakes, and still remembers what mattered most from the book.
