Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman offers an update on the future of Star Trek on Paramount+'s TV franchise. Along with overseeing Star Trek's TV series on Paramount+, Kurtzman is the executive producer and co-showrunner of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Alex directed and wrapped filming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's season 2 finale two weeks ago.
With Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2's filming completed, there is currently no new Star Trek in production or greenlit since Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout began running Star Trek's TV franchise in 2016. Kurtzman is currently celebrating this week's premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's season 1 finale, which had an FYC screening with the cast and executive producers in Los Angeles.
TrekMovie's Anthony Pascale spoke with Alex Kurtzman, who gave new insight about Star Trek's TV future on Paramount+. Kurtzman says he's only "at the beginning of the conversation" with Paramount Skydance about what's next for Star Trek, but that "we've gotten nothing but support." Most intriguing is Alex noting that "specific shows" have been discussed. Read Kurtzman's quote below.
“Yes, I’ve had conversations with them about the future of Star Trek. Yes, we’ve gotten nothing but support. Yes, there have been specific shows that have been discussed. And we’ll see. I’m truly at the beginning of the conversation with them now. And so I hesitate to say anything to you, because I don’t have anything to report yet. But I can report that the conversations are happening.”
Alex Kurtzman clarified to TrekMovie that his Star Trek conversations have involved "new shows” and “the shows we already have.” Kurtzman also noted that Paramount Skydance is in a "massive time of transition" due to its purchase of Warner Brothers Discovery, and so "everything is just happening slower" across the board, not just with Star Trek. Alex says Paramount Skydance executives want to be "thoughtful and methodical" about their next moves, including the future of Star Trek.
“What I can tell you, honestly, is that it’s not just what does Skydance want with Star Trek TV. Skydance also just bought Warner Brothers. And so you have an unbelievable amount [laughs] — like, it’s an almost inconceivable amount of organizational things to decide, right? They are in the middle of — it’s not just drinking from one firehose, there’s probably ten thousand hoses. And so everything is just happening slower as a result of this massive time of transition. And that is not exclusive to Star Trek. That’s across the board. And at the same time, they’re moving as quickly as they can and should, because they want to be thoughtful and methodical.”
Although Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout's contract to run Star Trek on Paramount+ is reportedly up at the end of 2026, Kurtzman has a vested interest in ensuring the future of the Star Trek franchise. Specifically, Alex and co-showrunner Noga Laundau are hoping to secure a season 3 (and 4) greenlight for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which is structured to reflect a four-year college experience for the cadets.
As for what "new" Star Trek shows Alex Kurtzman could be discussing with Paramount+, the known Star Trek TV projects in various stages of development include the live-action comedy created by Tawny Newsome and Justin Semien. Newsome previously indicated that Paramount+ has the scripts, and a decision about moving forward is in their hands.
Another series that fans have been clamoring for since it was revealed last August is Star Trek: United, the proposed comeback vehicle for Scott Bakula as President Jonathan Archer, created by Star Trek: Enterprise producer Michael Sussman. However, the long-desired Star Trek: Legacy seems to be a non-starter at Paramount+, despite consistent fan support for the idea since the end of Star Trek: Picard in 2023.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wrapped filming its fifth and final season in late December, and the concluding crop of episodes is in post-production. Executive producer and co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers confirmed that he and Akiva Goldsman pitched their spinoff called Star Trek: Year One about Captain James T. Kirk's (Paul Wesley) first year commanding the USS Enterprise to Paramount+, and they are waiting for a decision.
With the future of Star Trek still very much in flux, fans still have the 10-episode season two of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the 10-episode season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and the 6-episode fifth and final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to look forward to after Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1's finale premieres on Paramount+.
